Rosewood Mayakoba Cancun, Mexico
Consistently recognized as one of the top luxury resorts in the world, Rosewood Mayakoba is not just a resort, it’s an experience. Surrounded by exquisite coastline, lush jungles, and even a lagoon river running through, Rosewood Mayakoba is located south of Cancun and just north of Playa del Carmen. For us as Americans, the Yucatan Peninsula is extremely accessible, and is really only a 2-3 hour plane ride to paradise.
This year especially with all travel restrictions and bans that came with 2020, Mexico has been one of the few places still open to USA. Having a chance to get away, but still feel safe being closer to home was such a relief, making Mexico the perfect destination for our first international trip after COVID outbreak. And when we were planning our trip, we knew we had to stay at Mayakoba because it has long been a dream of ours to experience this incredible property!
We dive into our adventures here on our vlog, but we also wanted to share some more details on what it’s like to stay at Rosewood Mayakoba!
Best time to visit Cancun
Being so close to the equator, the climate doesn’t really fluctuate all that much. Cancun and Riviera Maya are generally warm and tropical throughout the year, so you can expect to get a lot of sunshine and warmth no matter when you go. That said, things to consider are:
Dry season is from January-April which will bring less rain fall and also lower humidity.
High season coincides with their dry season and with revolves around European/US holidays in Mid December-Mid January and Easter time. This is when you will find the highest rates and most limited availability.
Wet season is from August-November, though this is when we have travelled to Riviera Maya two years in a row and had amazing weather both times as well as cheaper rates being off season.
Something else to consider is wildlife migrations around the area. During certain times of the year you can see some amazing things diving below the surface:
Whale Sharks feeding season is from May-September with best chances for spotting them in July/August
Sea Turtle Nesting beings in late May with hatching/first steps to the see typically around late June
Airport Transfer/Arrival
Rosewood Mayakoba is about 30 minutes without traffic from the Cancun Airport. The property provides airport transfer shuttles for a quick and seamless transfer or you can hire your own taxi upon arrival. If you plan to only stay at the property the whole time, you don’t need to worry about renting a car, because there is plenty to do on site, though you can always have the concierge arrange for a taxi to go into town at anytime if you wish.
Accommodation
One of the most interesting parts about Rosewood Mayakoba is the variety of accommodation you can choose from during your stay. Each accommodation comes equipped with bicycles to enjoy on the numerous bike paths around the property. If bikes aren’t your thing, they also have a continuous flow of golf carts offering rides to anyone who asks! We stayed in their Beachfront Suite, with its own private plunge pool and beautiful view of the ocean. Though, we had a hard time deciding between this one and the Lagoon Suite because the lagoon view is beautiful and quite peaceful. On our next visit, we will probably try out the Lagoon Suite!
Lagoon Overwater Suites
Nestled into the mangroves and freshwater lagoons, the Lagoon Suites are the perfect secluded getaway spot. With private terraces and heated plunge pools, these are the perfect choice to capture stunning views of the natural surroundings.
Oceanview Suites
Located along the beach front with incredible views of the gorgeous Caribbean sea, the multi-level Oceanview Suites include a rooftop sundeck and luxurious private plunge pool.
Beachfront Suites
Uniquely located directly on the sand, the Beachfront Suites are as close as you can get to the ocean! They provide unobstructed views of one of Playa Del Carmen’s most stunning stretches of coastline and also include a heated private plunge pool as well as outdoor garden shower and private cabanas.
Signature Suites
If you are feeling like royalty, the Presidential Suites are as large and luxurious as you can imagine. With six bedrooms, and spacious living and dining areas, these suites would be perfect for a family getaway.

Service
Probably the highlight of our stay was the staff at Rosewood Mayakoba. From the moment we stepped off the plane until we arrived at our room, we were seamlessly handed off to a new Rosewood team member and were never left unaccompanied or questioning where to go next. On the drive to the hotel, we passed the PGA Golf Resort which is also a part of the Mayakoba property. Upon arriving we were taken to our room on a boat cruise. There is an emerald lagoon that winds through a mangrove jungle all around the property. To get to our room, we rode this luxury little boat to a dock just outside of our room. It was a fun experience to glide along these winding canals and seeing all the wildlife and nature the property has to offer.
We had a personal butler who answered any questions and helped us with any needs we required. We almost went into town to explore a little bit, but we loved staying on the property so much that we never left during our three day stay.
Meals
Combining Mexican ingredients with international cuisine, Mayakoba boasts eight different restaurants and bars on the property. They take steps for sourcing locally and sustainably for all of their menu items. To be honest, food can be on the expensive side, but it is does not fall short of expectation. Every dish is thoughtful and created to please.
You can choose to eat inside the restaurants, along the beach in cabanas/clubs or even set up private in suite dining for ultimate seclusion and privacy. We had a romantic moonlight dinner at our suite where the chef prepared dishes specific to our dietary needs (which are many 😊) and it was one of the tastiest meals we have had. If you did want go off site to grab some food in town, it is about a 20 minute taxi ride each way, so keep that in mind.
